The Chief Justice of India, Dr. D. Y. Chandrachud, delivered a poignant address during the foundation stone laying ceremony of the new Telangana High Court. In his speech, he paid tribute to the rich legacy of the judiciary in Telangana, specifically acknowledging the invaluable contributions of three legendary judges: Justice Subba Reddy, Justice Chinappa Reddy, and Justice Jeevan Reddy.
The CJI said "I pay homage almost every week in my life as a judge to these three remarkable individuals," remarked Chief Justice Chandrachud. He highlighted Justice Subba Rao's enduring constitutional vision, which continues to guide the judiciary, and praised Justice Chinappa Reddy's remarkable brilliance and social vision, particularly during the challenging period of the Emergency. Additionally, he lauded Justice Jeevan Reddy's intellectual prowess, noting his unparalleled contributions to various areas of law.
Justice Chandrachud underscored the significance of the new Telangana High Court, describing it as a beacon of justice and a symbol of the supremacy of law. He commended the court's impressive architecture and its venerable history, dating back to its establishment in 1919 by the Seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan.
The CJI added "The building of a High Court is not merely a structure; it is a public space for the contestation of ideas, values, rights, duties, and obligations," emphasized CJI Chandrachud. He stressed the importance of inclusive public spaces, highlighting existing inequalities such as the lack of facilities for women and the disabled. He noted that addressing these disparities is crucial for ensuring access to justice for all members of society.
Chief Justice Chandrachud also reflected on the broader transformation taking place in the Indian judiciary, particularly at the district level, where significant strides have been made in gender representation. He emphasized the importance of mentorship in the legal profession, urging judges to not only guide young lawyers but also support their colleagues on the bench.
Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud emphasized the critical role of mentorship in the legal profession, stressing that judges must actively guide the next generation of legal professionals. He stated, "It is imperative that judges play a proactive role in mentoring the next generation of legal professionals." Chief Justice Chandrachud highlighted the importance of judges imparting essential skills such as crafting judgments and navigating challenging interactions with lawyers and peers.
In conclusion, Chief Justice Chandrachud expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the event and reiterated his belief in the transformative power of the judiciary in shaping a more just and equitable society.
